چکیده

Earlier [ 1] we described an experimental procedure aimed at exarnining the spatial and temporal distribution of energy dissipation during crack initiation and propagation in a ductile polymer. The experiment combines a table-top tensile tester and an infrared imaging system. Because of the intense heating of the crack tip region, direct observation of the temperature rise not only provides an accurate measurement of the position of the crack tip, and thus the propagation velocity, but also much information for the analysis of plastic deformation, energy conversion, and evaluation ofthermal properties of polymer materials. In the present paper, we will present an analysis of the energy balance in such measurements.

A New Sensitivity Study of Thermal Stress Distribution for a Planar Solid Oxide Fuel Cell

Converting chemical energy into electricity is done by an electro-chemical device known as a fuel cell. Thermal stress is caused at high operating temperature between 700 oC to 1000 oC of SOFC. Thermal stress causes gas escape, structure variability, crack initiation, crack propagation, and cease operation of the SOFC before its lifetime. The aim of this study is to presen...

Simulating energy method for grout-induced crack analysis of rock structures at Chadormalu mine by extended finite element method

Fracture mechanics is a vital component involved in studying the exact behavior of rock materials. Detection and assessment of the behavior of rock joints injected by grout plays an important role in numerical modelling in rock mechanic projects. The importance of mechanisms associated with initiation and propagation of cracks due to hydraulic fracturing has led to a considerable interest in in...

On the crack propagation modeling of hydraulic fracturing by a hybridized displacement discontinuity/boundary collocation method

Numerical methods such as boundary element and finite element methods are widely used for the stress analysis in solid mechanics. This study presents boundary element method based on the displacement discontinuity formulation to solve general problems of interaction between hydraulic fracturing and discontinuities. The crack tip element and a higher order boundary displacement collocation techn...

Crack propagation and fracture in silicon wafers under thermal stress

The behaviour of microcracks in silicon during thermal annealing has been studied using in situ X-ray diffraction imaging. Initial cracks are produced with an indenter at the edge of a conventional Si wafer, which was heated under temperature gradients to produce thermal stress. At temperatures where Si is still in the brittle regime, the strain may accumulate if a microcrack is pinned. If a cr...
